Meet the Athlete

Wood is a professional BMX racer for Mongoose Bicycles and USA Cycling. He was born and raised in Montana, now living in Arizona. He was very competitive at a young age, and always loved racing motocross and BMX, and playing football and basketball. BMX always stood out to him the most and at age 12 he went all in. When Wood was 16, his family moved to Phoenix in 2018 to escape the cold weather and give him a better opportunity to chase his dream of being a professional BMX racer and things took off! In his first full season as a pro, he won my first USABMX race at 19-years-old, landed on several USABMX podiums, and made the Elite World Championships final and ended up 8th in the world.

Growing up, how did youth sports, cycling or others, impact who you are today?

I absolutely loved competition. No matter what it was, I always had to make things competitive. Whether it was school recess or a national BMX race I was going to bring my best effort. I think having that mindset as a young kid helped shape who I am today as a person. You can always expect my best effort.

What is one of the most pivotal experiences you've had that helped get you to where you are today?

I would say just having a supportive family. Without them, I would have never ended up in Arizona and been able to pursue my dreams. They sacrificed what we called home for 16 years largely in part to support my goals and that was the turning point in my racing career. I definitely would not be where I am without my parents and countless others who have helped me a long the way.
