About Gravel

Gravel racing has gained popularity in recent years as cyclists seek new challenges and experiences beyond traditional road or mountain biking. These events have a vibrant and inclusive community, offering a variety of activities from casual gravel rides to competitive races with professional athletes. They often feature a festive atmosphere with food, music, and camaraderie among participants.

Gravel races are typically held on a variety of surfaces, including gravel roads, dirt paths, forest trails, and sometimes even sections of pavement. The terrain can vary widely, from smooth gravel to rough, rocky sections, making it a versatile and unpredictable riding experience. Distances range from 30 to 200 miles, adding an element of endurance and strategy to the race, requiring riders to pace themselves and manage their energy levels.

Selection Committee

The discipline-specific selection committee provides oversight and accountability of the athlete nomination process. They ensure that the athlete selection procedures are followed and that criteria – both automatic and discretionary - are applied appropriately to nominate athletes. Once confirmed, they approve the athlete nominations.

Each discipline-specific selection committee is composed of three volunteers – a 10 Year Athlete, discipline expert unrelated to USA Cycling, and USA Cycling Discipline Director. Each selection committee includes at least one-third 10 Year Athlete Representatives as required by the USOPC Bylaws. Athlete Representatives on the selection committees are approved by USA Cycling’s Athletes’ Advisory Council.

The Gravel Selection Committee is as follows:

  • Brent Bookwalter - 10 Year Athlete; 2016 Olympian
  • Amy Charity
  • USA Cycling Discipline Director

All members of the Selection Committee and USA Cycling Sport Performance staff participating in a selection must comply with USA Cycling’s Statement of Ethics and Conflict of Interest Policy.
